What should the teacher know in TEYL?

I got bad experience when i started learning english in elementary school. I think my english teacher didn’t have good strategy to teach english for young learners. It affected to all the students to understand easily about material. As a matter of fact, most the students sit looking straight ahead and use minimal facial espressions, they also seldom ask question, make comments and respond with the sound of agreement or sound of understanding. The students got boring time in english lesson because the teacher didn’t use the strategy to teach english. The teacher only give a lot of tasks and never give feedback.

After i learn about TEYL I, as a good teacher, i think the teacher should be aware to all the learners’ need. The teacher should find a way to make the students interest. Not only sitting and keep too much talking in front of the class but also give the students chance to show their language skill. English class should be full of activities, by using games, songs, role play and develop classroom interaction to create the evective time in english learning process. There are a lot of things that teacher should know as an english teacher for young learners. More of them are :
  1. Teaching young learners presents its own set of challenges, no matter what the language of instruction.
  2. The learning strategies applied by young learners in learning new language is the teacher should look at the phisycal side of the young learners.
  3. They have short attention span. So teachers should vary their techniques to break the boredom. They should give varied activities as handwriting , songs , games etc.
  4. They are very active. The teacher should try to ask them to play games , role play dialogues and involve them in competitions
  5. They respond well to praising. The teacher should always encourage them and praise their work.
  6. They differ in their experience of language. Treat them as a unit , don't favour those who know some English at the expense of those who do not know
  7. They are less shy than older learners. Ask them to repeat utterances , resort to mechanical drills.
  8. They are imaginative. Use realia or pictures to teach new vocabulary related to concrete meanings.
  9. They enjoy learning through playing. Young learners learn best when they learn through games. Let games be an essential part of teaching.
